text

Ove is 59 years old and has just been fired, or more accurately, his bosses in white shirts have advised him to take some rest. As if at 59, we had to stop working! And what to do when you find yourself stupidly alone in your kitchen at 5.45am in the morning and you no longer have to go to work? Poor Ove feels very useless now. He does not deviate from his habits that morning and goes to inspect the neighborhood. After all, someone has to take care of it! He bangs into the signs to check their solidity, takes a look in the bicycle shed and notes in his notebook the registration numbers of the parked cars so that they do not stay there for more than 24 hours. The law is the law ! On the way back, he meets a cursed cat, or what is left of it since he has hardly any hair anymore and his tail is no longer in the standards. On his way home, he turns off the radiators, tidies the house, terminates his contracts, puts on his Sunday clothes and decides it’s the right day to die. It’s time for him to go join Sonja, his beloved wife who left her 6 months ago. But, we must believe that fate is playing dirty tricks on him. His time may not have come yet. Between the rope that breaks, the new sluggish neighbor who is not screwed to reverse with a trailer (must also say that he has a Toyota …) and comes to scrape the wall of his house, his wife pregnant who can find nothing better to do than to thank him by preparing a good little dish (with a smile on top of that …), the other clumsy neighbor and his woman’s woodcock who never leaves his mop on paw, his best friend with whom he’s been angry for decades but neither of whom knows why or the white shirts that are never fucked up doing their job properly, Ove will be hard pressed to find a moment of his own to finally finish …

Attention! If you come across an old grumbler, stuffed with principles and tics, routine, hating cats as much as these furry animals hate him (we understand why), stingy with compliments and all kind words, driving a Saab, not understanding it nothing to the latest technologies, allergic to men in white shirts and reigning terror and the law in his neighborhood, do not go your way and welcome him with open arms. You can even try to put your hand on his, who knows, maybe he will let himself be approached …

The author takes his time, for our greatest pleasure, to reveal Ove, his life, his sorrows and his torments, his childhood and his wife. Ove, a man you think you hate, is the complete opposite of what he shows. And, the guy, he hides his game well! He is terribly endearing, admirable, combative, generous, touching, commendable and loving. Neighbors or friends who revolve around him are just as important. Funny, funny or moving situations are described so judiciously and reveal so much of each person’s personality that each moment lived takes on a certain magnitude. the novel thus gains in intensity and emotions. The writing is carefully worked, each word is in its place and the end of the chapters are catchy. The author has a certain gift for twisting his sentences, and implying unspoken things. This novel, filled with deep tenderness and sincerity, with incredible humanity, genuine love and sincere friendships and unexpected encounters, is both funny and delicate. A pure delight …

Old, grumpy and suicidal, A Man Called Ove Audiobook … what a life!
