Stephen King – Bag of Bones Audiobooktext
Efficiency and sincerity.
It had been several years since I had read a Stephen King book, well, to be honest, I had read “Cellular” in 2007, but before this last, it must have been 15 years since I had moved away. one of the favorite authors of my adolescence.
I read “Cujo” during the summer between my 6th and 5th grade: one of my greatest reading memories; Looking back, I would still advise any young reader wishing to read The King to wait a few more years, 14-15 years old seems to me a more appropriate age to tackle a novel by this author. Stephen King – Bag of Bones Audiobook .
When I grabbed “Bag of Bones” (written in 1998) on my shelf to read the first paragraphs (each his own technique to see if the right time to read a book has arrived), the hairs on my forearms arose when I had not reached the bottom of the 1st page. My choice of reading was made for this month of August 2009.
For me, the 2 great qualities of this book are its sincerity and its effectiveness.
Efficiency, King has gotten us used to it in the past of course; succeeding in frightening with themes as often discussed in literature and cinema as ghosts and haunted houses, is not given to everyone. Many authors do well when it comes to creating suspense, an oppressive atmosphere, but where the exceptional author recognizes himself is in his ability to succeed in the paroxysmal scenes of his novel without make them fall into the ridiculous. from horror to big puppet, there is a step that many authors take without realizing it, but which King never takes.
When King’s characters dig in the mud in the flood, we dig with them.
Through his talent, King erases the distances between his main character and the reader; the visions of Mike Noonan (the main hero of “Bag of Bones”, successful writer by trade) become ours as a reader (besides, don’t we read to have visions?)
The key to this efficiency is sincerity without a doubt. When an author specializes in the art of frightening, I am convinced that he must draw even more strongly than for any other subject, in his reservoir of personal and intimate fears: mourning, blocking the writer in front of the page white, fear of the loss of a loved one, in the case of “Bag of Bones”.
All these themes are seen in an abyss between the visions of a writer and those of his reader, between the past and the present.
The author gives a lot, and it shows.
To put an end to the compliments, I would say that what is astonishing about King, and at the same time it is a necessary quality when it comes to provoking strong emotions, is his ability to bring his reader closer to his characters. . of all the novels I have read, I have never felt so close to the characters as to those of S. King.
2 tiny reproaches to the author:
1. I found the book a little too long, and in any case, I certainly preferred the 1st half to the second (I have no doubt that others will say the opposite, it is only my feelings).
500-600 pages, instead of 700, might have been sufficient, and even more effective.
2. Now that I have a number of books by this author behind me, I find that the plots and the characters often converge on certain points (you will say to me, one does not choose his obsessions): from book to book. the other, the characteristics of the main characters are very similar and sometimes pushed to the point of caricature (you know, the kind of caricature easy, but one can not help but love), maybe a necessity of the kind, precisely to allow the emergence of strong feelings for the reader?
1 strong reproach to the publisher (paperback): revealing key elements of the plot (one of which appears in the last 50 pages of the book) on the back cover is not very relevant. Stephen King – Bag of Bones Audiobook .
In any case, a very good book, a recommended reading, if you had to read it, don’t read the back cover before.
Light reading recommended before and after this book.
